How the Ladder Works
Players are placed on a ranked ladder at the start of the season.
A player may challenge any player ranked up to 2 positions above them to a match.
Winning a challenge match swaps the two players' ladder positions; losing leaves the ladder unchanged.
Scheduling a Challenge
Challenges must be scheduled and completed within 14 days of being issued.
If the challenged player cannot arrange a match within that window, the challenger wins by default and moves up the ladder.
Tap a player to be the challenger.
If the challenged player can't arrange the match within 14 days, the challenger wins by default and moves up.
Rally Scoring
A point is scored on every rally, regardless of which side served.
Winning a Game
First to 21 points, win by 2.
If the score reaches 29–29, the side that scores the 30th point wins the game outright.
Winning a Match
Matches are best of 3 games. Sides change ends after each game, and in the third game when the leading side reaches 11 points.
Rally scoring: every rally scores. When the leader reaches 11 there's a 60-second interval (and in a third game, the players change ends).
Legal Serve
Serve must be hit underarm, with the shuttle contacted at or below waist height.
Served diagonally into the opponent's correct service court.
Both feet must stay in contact with the court, within the service court boundaries, until the serve is struck.
Service Order
In doubles, the serving side alternates service courts only after winning a rally on serve; the server's partner does not serve until service passes to that side.
The serve is struck underarm, at or below the waist, diagonally into the opposite service court.
Net Height
5′1″ (1.55 m) at the posts, 5′ (1.52 m) at the center of the court.
Court Boundaries
Doubles matches use the full-width court boundary lines; singles matches use the narrower singles sidelines.
Singles uses the narrower singles sidelines. A shuttle landing in the outer strip is out.
Shuttles
Shuttles are provided by OPL organizers for all official matches; players may not substitute their own.
Faults (Loss of Rally)
Shuttle lands outside the court boundary.
Shuttle fails to pass over the net, or passes through or under it.
A player's racket, body, or clothing touches the net while the shuttle is in play.
The shuttle is hit twice by the same side, or caught and slung off the racket rather than struck cleanly.
A service fault — illegal serve height, foot fault, or serving out of turn.
Lets (Rally Replayed)
Shuttle strikes an overhead obstruction (ceiling, light fixture) at an indoor venue.
A shuttle from an adjacent court interferes with play.
The receiver was not ready when the serve was struck and did not attempt to return it.
Intervals
60-second interval when the leading side reaches 11 points in a game.
2-minute interval between games.
Punctuality & Forfeits
Drag the clock to see what happens when a player or team is late.
Disputes
Without an assigned official, disputed calls are settled by mutual agreement between sides, or at the on-site organizer's discretion.
Director Authority
Tournament Directors may alter or clarify rules, including ladder challenge windows.
These rules are effective for OPL Season 4 · Badminton 2026.
